KB208: Registering the .WGX extension on IIS

SYMPTOMS

When you deploy your application, you may receive the following error message:
HTTP 404 - File not found
Internet Information Services

CAUSE

This problem occurs because IIS is not familer with the WGX extension.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Open IIS MMC
  2. Select the Default Web Site or your website.
  3. Right Click on the website and select the properties menu item.
  4. Click on the Home Directory tab.
  5. Click on the Configuration button
  6. Scroll down and find .aspx extension
  7. Click on the Edit button
  8. Copy the Executable path and close the window
  9. Click on the Add button.
  10. Paste the copied executable path in Executable path textbox (Make sure you copied the correct ASP.NET version)
  11. Set the Extension to ".wgx"
  12. Select All Verbs option in the Verbs section
  13. Uncheck the "Check that file exists" check box.
  14. Click on the OK button untill your return to the main MMC
  15. Re-run your application
