Using VWG does not mean committing to a Windows Desktop application Look & Feel

I've read some very harsh comments from web developers regarding the concept of bringing desktop application components to the browser. Many view the desktop application paradigm to be too complicated when compared with many web only applications.

I think there's merit to the claim that what works on the desktop doesn't necessarily need to be transferred to the web as-is. However, as applications grow in complexity I find that I revert back to desktop controls and behaviors because they are familiar both to my users and to me and bottom line because they work. It is for this reason that Visual WebGui focused on launching its platform with XP like desktop controls. Regardless I'd always prefer to design and build my application using familiar components even if my users see the application a bit differently.

However, using Visual WebGui does not limit you in any way in providing your users with a compelling web oriented look & feel a la Gmail or Flickr. By using VWG's themes and flavors you can override the Windows look & feel and realize your vision without any compromise. VWG controls are rendered using standard XSLT, CSS and Javascript enabling you to fully customize look, behavior and layout. Themes can even include transitions and animations.

As our community grows, we envision more and more themes and flavors to be readily availble on our marketplace providing you with a choice of build or buy. Can you create a theme tutorial that show how to change the skin?

I would like to have a Vista theme, so I think a video/demo that shows the skin has been changed would be great.

Yes, I will have a theme movie very soon and we are also planning on releasing a couple of themes so you can use as a reference to how to create themes.

I've read those comments you refer, and I think some opinions are made without any experience in building BIG "web applications".
Target of this framework insn't (mainly) to build the "oh-so-cute" personal web site, neither to make some astonishing marketing site.
I design and build enterprise-core webapps (coming from a past of win32 coding) and with this FW suddenly tons of knowledge of web technology muted into time-consuming garbage.
If you must deal with functionality and time optimization coding this is a huge technique improvement.
Shortly.. don't give up, probably VWG will not be used to build fancy sites, but is a must-have tool for programmers that hate ... local installations!

I'm a amateur .NET developer. I work as IT in a primary school. We wanted to create a report-program (inserting points and comments, graphics, 'follow student' systems, ...)
I really didn't want any desktop app. So I started working out a .NET application. I've wrote thousands lines of code, to create a User Friendly UI. I was completely frustrated about getting the UI, speed, simplicity, ... good.
When I discovered VWG I was saved. I've started from scratch (except for the Security Modules and Sql Databases) I've created the same work in less time and a lot of code less! The UI was very easy to implement (the XP look and feel). And indeed for big applications (as this program is) a consistent look and feel (what users are used to) is better. No fancy ajax-resizing or animation is needed to get more functionality.

I really appreciate the work Guy has accomplished.
