Cannot access disposed object: DesignerFrame

All,

I had a problem in a version of VWG nearly a year ago where, after getting to a certain point of complexity with the application, I would consistently get a Visual Studio error dialog indicating "Cannot access disposed object" of type "DesignerFrame." I had discussed it on the forums here and in the customer forums, but it couldn't be reproduced.

I just had the same problem with VS2010 and VWG 6.4 (note, this only happens when designing VWG applications). Googling around, I find that the issue had been reported to Microsoft and they had finally tracked it down to DevExpress controls, so closed the problem as external to Visual Studio.

Unfortunately, I don't have DevExpress controls installed, but I believe the same issue that rose up with those controls is also present in the VWG design package. It seems that the DevExpress problem is fixed in their tools, which is excellent news since it indicates that the problem is traceable and solvable. More details can be found here.

I don't know if anyone has run into this besides me, but I can't believe that I create the nastiest UIs in the customer base. Maybe it's just the combination of controls I favor that cause the issue? But I would love someone at Gizmox to read through what's been documented on connect.microsoft and possibly even contact the DevExpress folks if it would help track it down. I'm absolutely convinced the problem is in the VWG designer code, as I've never seen this behavior when not working VWG interfaces.

Any help you can provide would be most welcome.

Thanks.

-- Michael

Re: Cannot access disposed object: DesignerFrame

Hi Michael,

I remember this problem being discussed on the forums and I also remember that whatever hard we tried, we were not able to reproduce the problem locally, and honestly I can say that I have not had this problem myself. There seem to be very few reports of this problem, but I think I recall there is more than you reporting it... I could be mistaken though.

That does by no means say that there is no problem, it only, and still, says that to be able to fix, we need to be able to reproduce the scenario so we know where to look for the problem in our code.

As you seem to have this problem fairly often, would it be possible for you to assemble (a part of) your project that does show these errors and send it to us, and we would be willing to sign an NDA if necessary, so we can finally reproduce and track down this problem ?

Please consider if you would be able to send us at least a part of your project, with reproducing script so we can continue with this.

Palli

It happens to me too.  Useally, when I try to close several windows very quickly.

The fact is that, even though you have to cancel via the task manager, I have yet to lose anything.

Inconvienent?  Yep!  Show stopper no.

hi Ron, next time it happens you don't need to end task and risk losing work:

drag the error message down to your task bar

move your mouse so that the cursor is over the task bar and not over visual studio

now press your enter key to "Ok" the error message - the error message will keep appearing (continuing pressing the enter key) until it is in the center of the VS Designer when it will eventually dismiss fully

Now press the ALT key on your keyboard to activate the main menu

Press F (File)

Press X (Exit)

If you do have unsaved changes you will now  get prompted to save them

PS it is important that during this you do not move your mouse cursor off of the task bar otherwise the error messages will come back and you'll have to do it all over again

Cheers james

I just want to add that I have this problem ... all ... the ... time.  I thought it might have been related to the fact that we work in Virtual Machines (but that was just a quick assumption based on never seeing a thread about this).

What I also noticed is that it doesn't happen for all our projects/solutions.  Just some.  Or, it's harder to reproduce in some versus others.

On the projects that do have a problem, I can re-produce it very easily.  If you have that project open/focused, and you walk away, and come back to your VM after it's already in sleep mode (when the screen goes white and you are told that your connection is lost), when you connect back to the VM and log back into windows (in the VM), you'll get that annoying little message box.  Hello Task Manager!!

That's all I've got, but there's definitely an issue.  If WebGUI'ers ever want to see this reproduced, connect to my desktop, it won't be a problem!
