VEM License - how can I use it?
I read the License.rtf file in the Gizmox.WebGUI.Server folder and it says a lot about non-commercial, non-institutional, personal use only.  I don't need VEM for personal use, but could use it in commercial or institutional settings where MSSQL Express or MSDE are installed running a Visual WebGUI application.  Is that tabu?  If so, when will VEM become a "product" and how much will it cost?

Re: VEM License - how can I use it?

Hi Harryr,

We will change the license of the VEM to LGPL as the rest of the Visual WebGui SDK. Also a subversion based version control will be soon available to enable easy participating in the VWG and VWG related development.

Cheers,
Guy

Re: VEM License - how can I use it?

IANAL (I am not a licenseExpert), but I did find this, "permits use of the library in proprietary programs" on this page about LGPL.

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/why-not-lgpl.html

So, to get it straight from the source, is there any situation in which you do not want VEM and VWG to be used without some kind of compensation?

Thanks,

harryr

Re: VEM License - how can I use it?

Hi Harryr,

The LGPL license from our part is provided to enable developers with in companies to use our platform and sample applications freely (with or with out compensation). We will in the not so far future provide commercial versions of VWG and our other offers including commercial support but we will still want to preserve what we believe will make this framework a standard-de-facto.

So bottom line feel free to use our LGPLed products and you can count on it, that if you will need support, custom developments or one of our premium offerings it will soon be available in a commercial offering as well.

Thanks,
Guy

Re: VEM License - how can I use it?

Hello Guy,

Can you please say true ?

WebGUI is NOT free at all!

I sent you a couple of emails, to support email etc, but no one answred is it so hard ?

or is it so hard to write true about it's licence, or place it on first page or something ?

free version works with ONLY 20 concurrent users and thios is the only thing that stops me from using this product.

also we CAN NOT use WebGui in commertial software!

I don't know after this if it can be counted as free software.

The most interesting thins is we want to pay, and we really want to use it in production, but because this very tricky licence and tricky piar we can not think about it and waste our development time to investigate and decide to use it.

Please, I have never seen another product with so small amout of information about it's licence, neither I have seen any framework that is used to involve as much developers around the world as possible and I am sure in the end announcing the commercial licence which will not give any bonuces comparing to another frameworks.

So can anyone in this forums answer at last - Can I use this product without 20 users limitations in commertial software ??
