Third party components for VWG

Hello VWG community members,
I take the opportunity that third party controls is being discussed here in the forum to open a new thread and to address you.
We are aware to the fact that one of the major concerns, you VWG community have, is the choice of VWG native controls offered 'out of the box'.
VWG 6.4 will offer a giant step forward with simplifying custom controls programming and will also provide new tutorials and documentations in order to make it very clear and easy to customize an existing or creating new user control.
Having said that, we also realize that the majority of you do not want to spend recourses on writing new controls and would rather prefer the productivity of using third party controls 'out of the box'.
We are also aware to the compromises that go with wrapping current third party vendors components. The following post reflects it well enough:
Youritstaff wrote in a post on this forum on 11/19/2009 7:13 PM:
"I ended up down the Visual WebGui path over a year ago because of it's better performance over the Infragistics controls. It's pages used a lot less bandwidth and the web server performance was better as advertised. I traded some grid features for performance. If I wrap Infragistics UltraWebGrid in a VWG control, how will the performance be? Will the VWG app engine make it lite and quick like the other native WebGUI controls? Basically, will I get the best of both worlds? Thanks"

As we all know and experienced with other vendor's components, VWG current third party wrapper does not support the controls natively. The result is that a third party control runs as if it runs natively atop ASP.NET, which unfortunately doesn’t match VWG enhanced performance.

We do realize that one of the major reasons to choose VWG is performance and therefore we are starting discussions with couple of component vendors, to partner with to offer you VWG community, VWG natively running third party controls.

That will enable you a choice of third party controls with VWG enhanced performance and security.

As we had already started these discussions we do want your opinion on the following issues:

-      How important for you is the performance issues with the wrapped controls?

-      What kind of controls you miss, taking into consideration the 'out of the box' controls that VWG already offers?

-      What other wishes you might have concerning this issue?

Please take the time and get involved by replying to this post. As always we want the community's feedbacks to lead us with our decision making and offering.

Thanks for your attention, and thanks in advance for your comments.

Re: Third party components for VWG

Hi Navot, verry good you started this thread as there is a lot of dicussion going on for wrapped controls.

The one i use now is the wrapped Crystal Reports control. Performance is allready an isue, last week i posted an issue about that. Because the reports get really slow while they are fast in the Crystal Reports development engine.

I guess performance is always an important issue, the user wants the 'click and go' experience in anny application. So also for wrapped controls this is an issue.

For us a grid like the DevExpress Webgrid http://demos.devexpress.com/ASPxGridViewDemos/GroupingSorting/Grouping.aspx is a important one. Things like the flexible grouping, master - detail and formatting we don't want to make by ourselfs.

I read your post about contact with the leading control suppliers to provide dedicated VWG enabled controls.  For me this would be the best solution. A lot of people here have experience allready with these controls. These parties are experienced on buidling them. And... for my opinion Gizmox should focus on the core system make that as best as posible and leave things like controls to the parties as Infragistics and DevExpress, in that way you can make the VWG-community even biger by using each other strengths.

I definitly will buy the Devexpress controlset if they are VWG-aware.

Best regards,

Tom

Navot,

As you know I just purchased the Infragistics Web control suite.  I was able to wrap the grid control successfully but now I am trying the schedule controls.  I guess I thought it would be easier to wrap them.  I didn't realize you would have to have controls within the main control you are wrapping.  For the Scheduling controls you have to have a WebDayControl, WebScheduleInfo, OleADOControl, and a datasource all within the wrapped control.  I have been able to finally get the control to show up on the screen however, no data is being persisted.

I guess what I am trying to say is if you do get an agreement with the companies I hope they make it much easier to use and yes since VWG doesn't have the equivalent controls then I too would most likely purchase the VWG control suite.

Ori,

Would you consider wrapping one of the scheduling controls in order to demonstrate the wrapping like you did for the other controls?

Thanks, Joe

Hi Navot,

The control I am most interested in is the WebScheduler from http://www.componentgo.com/

Cheers

Re: Third party components for VWG

I have used the DevExpress WinForms and ASP.Net tools for over a year now and found them to be very good quality backed up with timely forum support. You should court them and lobby them to port their controls to VWG. This might be good timing because they are not as advanced with their Silverlight components as Telerik, Infragistics or ComponentArt, so attracting them to VWG would bring a win-win for both you, them and your respective customers.
