Hi Michael & Osmosis -

To the best of my knowledge, here is a good summary of the licensing options:

Project-based Applications:

Overview:  Intended for applications developed for Clients (or under 5 deployments).  Licensed per developer.

  • ProfessionalStudio - Perpetual          Purchase a Major release (ie, includes all of 6.x.x); Includes all future enhancements & fixes within the Major release version purchased.
  • ProfessionalStudio - Subscription      Purchase a Subscription (recurring every 1 or 2 years).  Includes all releases of all Major versions (6.x.x, 7.x.x, etc.)
  • ExpressStudio - Free.  Requires application to use the LGPL open-source license

Product-based Applications:

Overview:  Intended for applications either a.) being sold/deployed to 5 or more Clients, b.) web-based products having 5 or more organizations as customers.  Site license or per developer.

  • OEM/SaaS License.  Need to speak with Sales rep to negotiate a success-based royalty license.
  • ExpressStudio - Free.  Requires product to use the LGPL open-source license

Hope this helps!  Gizmox, please correct anything I may have missed.

Ryan

VWG Professional/Commercial edition, is a onetime payment; this means that being an ISV or an business developing many apps, you will purchase a per seat license (either subscription or specific version perpetual license) and be able to produce as many apps as you like with free deployment.

you said produce as many apps as I like with free deployment. Free deployment to ANYBODY for use by ANYBODY or only within MY company for use within my company?

The only exception would be an OEM/SaaS which is defined by either a product which is distributed to more than 5 organizations or a single product serving 5 organizations at the same time from the same web farm. Being an OEM or a SaaS provider will require an OEM license (the will consider high volume purchase).

I'm getting tired of all this license "language" and trying to translate to real world scenario. I have a web product that is licensed and hosted by us for more than 5 clients. Seperate deployments per each client on one or more servers.  What do I fall under?

What's the difference between Project and Product? I have one core product but many times we customize it and I technically call those "Projects". Now I need to keep track of if I customize my app or not for that client?

I think that all member one day will be OEM/SaaS.

Examples with VWG Pro:

1. Consultant -> Can use your VWG Pro license for 5 customers (1 application per customer OR 5 differents customers);
2. Developer  -> Can only deploy to 5 customers OR Can only deploy to 1 server with 5 vwg applications

Am I wrong?

Yes if you have more as 5 customers using the same application your under the OEM/SAAS license allready. Doesnt matter if they are on one server or on 5 servers.

I contacted sales about the OEM structure coz i dont understand why this isnt put on the website to make it all clear and transparent. Its as follows, the basic arrangement is $200 per organisation with volume discounts or 15% of your sales price wichever is lower.

I think the structure is becoming quite complex this way, i would prefer to buy a develepment platform and then like todo with it what i want. If i develop an application in Visual Studio i also dont have to pay Microsoft for each application that i deploy.

Guys did you mind you also have to pay $500 per server processor if you want to use the Server Side Extensions.
