Re: Visual Studio 2005 Crash

Here's how I was able to create the crash.

  1. Create a VisualWebgui Application project. (6.3.6.a)
  2. Rename the default created Form1.cs to MainForm.cs (Right-click Form.cs in the solution explorer and  rename)
  3. Click Yes when dialog asks if you want to update all project references to MainForm.cs
  4. In the designer click on the form and note whether the property grid in the properties window is blank
  5. If the properties window is blank, click on the properties windows dropdown (at the top of the properities window) which references the MainForm
  6. Visual Studio should crash.

Notable is that the web.config still references the Form1 instead of MainForm.

Re: Visual Studio 2005 Crash

Hi Bill,

I was able to get this to occur with both C# and VB projects but sometimes I had to reame the form twice.

The properties windows dropdown still shows the old name which of course no longer exists.

Looking at the .Name property it has not been updated and neither has the Class

The .Text has also not changed but thats no big deal

 Jay (et al),

I was also able to set up the crashing condition by (1) first renaming form1.cs to mainform.cs (as outlined in my last post) and then saving the entire project/solution.   Now (2)  re-open the solution and open both the mainform.cs and the mainform.cs [Design], so that both tabs are opened in the visual studio code window area.  (This might require just opening mainform.cs and then right-clicking to select "View Designer")  Next (3), with both tabs open (Mainform.cs & MainForm.cs [design],  make some code changes to MainForm.cs.  Finally, (4), right click and select "View Designer".  If the properties grid window is blank, (again except for the top dropdown), then as I said in my last post, select  the form (or any control) from the dropdown at the top of the properties grid window.  VS should crash.

Please note that I found that if I closed the Mainform.cs [design] tab before switching to it with a right click on "View Designer" from MainForm.cs, then the property grid was not blank, and VS does not crash.  I am not fully certain of all the conditions involved in the crash, but they seem to involve (1) a renamed Form1.cs (2) holding both MainForm.cs & MainForm.cs[design] open in the code/designer window  (3) making a change to the code file and (4) trying to switch to the designer using a right-click to View Designer.

I am hoping someone else will verify that there is a crash on the steps I have outlined here.

Hello Bill,

Thank you for your cooperation and for doing your best to come up with a scenario for reproducing this problem.

I opened a new issue on the subject. Please view it here and track our progress.
