Real doubts
Lost the entire post. Be careful going to preview.
Friends, I found about WebGUI couple of days back and I have been doing some research on it. Examples look extremely impressive. I tried drag-drop myself and experience was just like WinForm development. However, when something looks so nice at first sight, you start having more doubts.
I am trying to develop a web-based medical software that will be data intensive. Because of all AJAX hype my boss wants me to use it as much as possible. He keeps showing me iGoogle all the time. So it should like website and AJAX. I am not so good at web development though. I kind of get lost in response and context objects. So I thought something like WebGUI can be an excellent option. Please guide me on the following:
- What are WebGUI's limitations?
- Does it need special kind of deployment?
- Can I have ASP.NET and WebGUI pages mixed?
- How about third-party development? Let's say I buy a chart control from someone which is ASP.NET compatible. Will it work in WebGUI?
Thanks for help.

Re: Real doubts
Hi There,

Thanks for taking the time to look into VWG.

Visual WebGui is an extension to ASP.NET, actually it is build based on the foundations of ASP.NET. A Visual WebGui site is actually a ASP.NET site which means that you can have them mixed very easily. Especially if you will master Gateways, which are a way to work with regular responses where they are needed. You can search this forum for more info about gateways. To sum it up Visual WebGui inherits most of the ASP.NET features in terms of security, scalability and so on... If you are considering mass users we will soon be introducing a VWG extension that will allow to support full web farm floating sessions. That said we have very large projects running on the standard version with session sticky perfectly.

You need to master WinForms development and some minor variations but basically its pretty much close to WinForms. There are places where the architecture of the web required changes to the WinForms model but it is very close...

You can mix them with no sweet, sharing the same session and all...

Regarding third party ASP.NET/DHTML components, they can be integrated in to the system. You can see that the developers zone has some sample integrations such as the ZedGraph library and the FCKEditor library.

Hope that helped...

Cheers,
Guy

Re: Real doubts

Hi Guy, this surely helps. Thanks a lot man. I am very comfortable with WinForms development so I think I am going to give this a shot. Can I ask you one thing though? Is it possible for you to give me a link that entails history of this toolkit's development? Is it completely free or is there any paid support mechanism? My boss wants me to evaluate and he thinks we can't rely on this if it is free. He wants to see some sort of history and measure reliability that way.

Thank you so much.

Re: Real doubts
Hi Malay

Don't be so doubtful, VWG is there to enable simplified web development, as it seems exactly what you look for.

Regarding limitation, VWG is as scalable as ASP.NET. Its major value is for application development. No special kind of deployment needed. Yes you could have them mixed. ASP.NET is VWG's underlying technology and they can definitely be mixed. You can wrap and implement third party's and if you search this forum and tour the website you will see quite some tutorials on how to do it.

Hops some of your doubts are removed.

Cheers

Re: Real doubts
Hi,

I just wanted to add that commercial support and license is closer then ever. We are working full speed to provide a fully functional on line purchasing of support tickets with known SLA and licenses. So you very soon you will be able to enjoy both worlds, the wide adoption of an open source platform with the security of a supported product.

Cheers,
Guy
