Installer Bug - Sources Remain
Modified By rdhatch on 7/9/2009 11:05:10 AM)

Hi Guy & Team -

I installed & removed 6.3.8 w/ sources & installed 6.3.6a without sources... yet my Sources 3.5 folder still remains.  This will cause problems for me because I thought my apps were using the 6.3.6 GAC DLLs, when really they were still using the 6.3.8 Reference DLLs.

Can you please verify this?  Thank you -

Ryan

PS.  Is there an easy way to switch between Normal SDK & Sources SDK versions... without breaking all the Gizmox references in my projects?

Re: Installer Bug - Sources Remain

Hi Ryan,

I ran a test on a fresh WindowsXP VM with VS2008 standard just now and installed VWG 6.3.8 NEt 3.5 with sources, and then uninstalled. Nothing left on the program files after uninstallation.

My guess is that you changed something in the folder and/or recompiled and then did the uninstallation. I didn't try that. What do you think ?

Regarding referencing after switching with and without sources, as well as switching versions, then I agree with you that it becomes quite tedious if you are working with multiple versions like I am, or you have a frequent version switching.

What I did was to write a VS2008 integration that rereferences all Gizmox DLL's for me, as well as making sure they are all set with Copy Local = True. This utility is still in testing, but it is not that hard to write. What was the tricky part was to get it to install correctly and that was by no means a trivial task. Unbelievably length process, which requires you to access a MS web page to allocate a key etc. etc...

Who knows... maybe I will make the binaries available for the community some day after testing it a little more.

Hi Palli -

I tested this again by uninstalling 6.3.7a & 6.3.8a, both with Sources NET 3.5.  Sources still remain.  Here is a screenshot after uninstalling.  Both leave this exact same file structure:

What are we doing differently?

Ryan

PS.  I would love the little VS Macro you have!  Could you make a short Jing screencast on how to correctly install it?

PPS.  Would it be possible to simply add the Gizmox Source DLLs to the GAC after compiling?  Wouldn't this allow us to always use the GAC for the Gizmox DLLs - for both the Source & Normal installs?  Could we still debug & step-into the Gizmox source using DLLs from the GAC?

Re: Installer Bug - Sources Remain

Hi Ryan,

This is strange. I just checked on my PC at work where I have Vista (this looks like Vista you are using right?). There I have installed and uninstalled many versions of both with and without sources, and the current folders just show the without sources structure, as that's the currently installed option.

How do you uninstall? Do you use the .MSI package, or do you use the Control panel?

Regarding the "macro" as you call it, it's not a macro. It's a VS2008 integration or addon that installs with an .MSI package and I will need some more work until I am completely satisfied with it. I was waiting for some comments from Ori about it, but maybe I'll send it to you via email and you can test. It's not an official utility, by a long shot. It's just my personal program written for timesaving. Using it, it doesn't really matter where the DLL's are. You just rereference and everything is done for ya. Latest addition was to upper the private version during the rereferencing. Watch your email. I'll send it soon and you'll have to use it at your own risk :-)

Regarding copying the DLL's to the GAC, then I think that will really complicate things for you. Don't know if you can debug that way, but for some reason Gizmox decided to move their DLL's out of the GAC, where they were to begin with. I presume that was because of some conflicts ppl were having with it there.

Hi Palli -

I just tried uninstalling 6.3.8a w/ sources - again - and sources still remain (as pictured above).

I'm using Control Panel to uninstall.  Thoughts??

Ryan

PS.  Yes, I'm using Vista.  I had zero Visual Studios / folder windows opens.
