FCK Editor causes all controls to become non-responsive

Hello,

We're experiencing an issue that is very hard to explain, hopefully you can provide us with some guidance.

In the rules section of our application the user opens a modal form.  From that form they can open another modal form containing an FCK Editor.  After doing this 1-5 times all controls in the application stop responding to click events.  You can close both modal forms and get back to the main form, but nothing happens when you click the main menu or any links or buttons.

I've been looking at this for the better part of a day now, can you give me any suggestions?

We see this behaiviour in Production (VWG 6.3.12) , QA (VWG 6.3.14) and Local (VWG 6.3.14) environments.  We haven't updated Production in several weeks, but this issue wasn't reported until yesterday.  Maybe it's connected to an MS update?

I set IE to display a notificiation about every script error, then I started seeing this error, usually just before the buttons all stopped responding: Line 33, Char: 390. Error: 'this.LinkedField.form' is null or not an object. Code: 0 URL: http://localhost/FCKeditor/editor/fckeditor.html?InstanceName=CID_6&Toolbar=Default  But I can't say for sure this is related to the buttons going non-responsive.

I see similiar behaiviour when using the site in Firefox, but not exactly the same.  Sometimes the FCK Editor value isn't updated with the text entered by the user, but the buttons do not become non-responsive.

I'm sorry, I wish I could provide a better explanation.  I'll create a video in cam studio to demonstrate the issue and send it to your support email address.

I appreciate any help you can give,
Andrew

Re: FCK Editor causes all controls to become non-responsive

Hi Andrew,

I found this issue here, which is describing a problem very similar to yours, and I believe it is the same problem. If that is the case, it has already been verified as fixed in 6.4.0P3 with no workaround recorded for 6.3.x.

Re: FCK Editor causes all controls to become non-responsive

Thanks Palli, this issue does seem similiar.  Except that in our system all buttons and menu items become non-responsive.  You can close the open dialog box(es) but clicking buttons or menu items does nothing.  I put together a video trying to demonstrate this behaiviour and sent it to your support address.  Hopefully it was helpful.

Unfortunately this is no minor bug for us.  Our company is in the healthcare industry, and our users use the FCK editor in various places throughout our system to enter text that ends up on healthcare ID cards and other healthcare related communications.  The fact that text is sometimes not saved, and that entering text can screw up your session so that you have to completely close down your browser is pretty much a show-stopper.

What confuses me the most is that this functionality isn't new.  It's been in our system for 2+ years and working great.  Then we suddenly find the problem in both 6.3.12 and 6.3.14, even though we haven't pushed to our production environment for several weeks.

Re: FCK Editor causes all controls to become non-responsive

Hi Andrew,

I understand an issue like that can be a real showstopper in certain applications, and I will do what I can to help.

I started by trying really hard to reproduce this problem here and I was unable to. Even with multiple dialogs, I could not.

I agree with you that this sounds a little like it might be related to some OS update, and then again it might not.

I want to suggest two things. First, I think you should check the version of FCKeditor you are using. You can do that by viewing the contents of the file FCKEditor/editor/dialog/fck_about.html and search for the string "version". You will find both version and build number about in the middle of the file. My guess is that you have version 2.3.x or 2.4.x (2.3.2 is distributed with 6.3.14). If this version is lower than 2.6.4.1, which is distributed with 6.4.0Beta2, then I suggest you update the FCK JS components and see if that fixes your problem. FYI, I just tested replacing the FCKEditor folder of a 6.3.14 application with the FCKEditor folder contents of 6.4.0Beta2 app and the FCKEditor seems to work fine with that update, so I think it should be safe to test it at least, making sure you have proper backups of course.

If this does not work, then I must ask you to create a minimal sample app to reproduce, because I am not able to.

Hope this helps,

Palli

Re: FCK Editor causes all controls to become non-responsive

Hi Palli, thanks for working with me on this.

I have constructed a sample application that should demonstrate the problem and sent it to your support email address.

(I believe we are having some email issues this morning, can you please post back here and confirm that you received my email?)

Thanks,
Andrew
