Re: Where are we with 6.3.x and where are we going with 6.4.x...

but 6.3.x was to be our first commercial version so you guys expected it to be perfect at the beginning. It is totally understandable and we anticipated it and invested allot of time in QA but as it turns out Visual WebGui is so big that we cannot QA our own framework without the open source development model.

With that we will create a beta testing program which will provide committed developers that will participate in actively checking Visual WebGui.

Your posts seems to imply that you essentially have no automated testing in place and your testing is all done manually and now you are soon going to be recruiting for more testers with another new program?

I completely agree with Ryan about a unit testing program and I've brought this up before but then Gizmox never responds. You should really think about setting up a unit testing library based on WatiN or WebAii that works against the catalog or a variation of the catalog. Sometime ago, I tried to use WatiN but it wouldn't drive your forms. Maybe one of these libraries has since improved to the point that they can be used. Assuming they can, then as an alternative to people submitting small sample apps with reproducable problems they could instead submit unit test cases that run against that benchmark application and that submitted unit test case could then be added in with all the others. Outside people could also submit new forms to the benchmark application.

It would be nice to get an answer from Gizmox to ryan's, mine, and others questions regarding a StandardStudio or lite version that restores the ability to use full visual studio with the sdk.

Re: Where are we with 6.3.x and where are we going with 6.4.x...

  Hi,

We have not found a solution to this issue in terms of automation which stratified us and actually caught issues. I will look into the frameworks which you sent and check if we can use them (thanks for bringing those to my attention). I would be the first to be automating a process if I can. I truly believe that automated testing provide a good answer in some cases and less in other. There are many parameters which are not taken under consideration under automated testing like browser versions, settings, latency, unexpected user behavior, different coding styles and etc. As an enhanced sanity check that might be great but I don't believe it will replace the need for beta testing.

I just want to make sure that it does not look like I am trashing the automation option, I will seriusly look into it even if it only provides you guys with actuall benefit. I just believe that it will provide a very partial solution which has to be accompanied with actual developers working with the release.

Regarding the StandardStudio issue this forum is supposed to be technical in nature and as such I will not go into the subject. I will say that currently there are no plans on producing such a version. We are getting lots of convertions to the Professional version and we have lots of conversions in the pipeline schedualled to when 6.3.x will be stabilized, with that the expression edition looks to be generating atraction as well.

Cheers,
Guy
