VWG is making large steps towards cross platforms mobile browsers support
Modified By roy.goffer on 2/1/2011 5:08:34 AM)

Hi All,

I wanted to share with you our excitement from the VWG mobile devices support initiative which looks very promising. As you all know, VWG brings a large set of benefits to data centric web development and the most native expansion for VWG framework is to bring the same values to mobile development.

Today’s VWG versions are enabling data-centric, line of business apps accessibility though plug-in free browsers and the approach for mobile devices support remains the same, providing access through native mobile browsers.

We already aired a sneak-peek demo which extends the ‘Webmail’ demo. In the original ‘Webmail’ demo a .NET developer took the desktop version of MS Outlook 2007 and mimicked it within VWG with a POP3 backend support. It took a month and a half of work. You can browse to a 6.4 upgraded version of this app HERE.

[Demo info: Username: itzik, Password: 12345 – this version also supports changing VWG themes through View -> Theme, the default theme is set to ‘Office 2010’].

For a mobile support sneak-peek, we used the same codebase to generate native mobile user interfaces which is currently mimicking the iPhone mail app.

The current demo supports Android and iPhone, you can browse to the demo here:
http://67.205.112.81:8080/MobileWebMail/MainForm.mwgx

(just browse to this URL from your iPhone/iPad or Android browser and click Login at the entrance – no need to type-in any user name or password for the demo).

Note: the demo is also browseable from the desktop Chrome and Safari browsers, however, is does not yet support IE or FireFox.

As for mobile devices support roadmap, in the upcoming months we are about to continue this development and to enable:

  • Mobile designated framework extension which includes development for Form Factors of choice using a subset of the current controls
  • Agent based UI adjustability which will show iPhone/iPad look & feel on iPhone (Safari) browsers and Android look & feel on Android based browsers etc. This can be overridden to provide any other look & feel or combination using the Theme Designer and the capabilities attached to it.
  • Complementing the client side support for a broad range of smart handheld devices.
  • “Mobile Streamer” mechanism, which enables mapping a full-screen desktop browser application into Mobile devices Form Factors and capabilities using mostly streaming definitions rather than recreation of UI.

We would love to get your feedbacks!

Kind Regards,
Itzik Spitzen

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback!

You can rest assure, Windows Phone 7 will not be forgotten, VWG will be accessible from cross IE versions including the mobile versions of course.

As for a bi-directional socket, we are going to implement it as a part of HTML5 support for sockets; I agree that it can be very useful.

Kind Regards,
Itzik Spitzen

And what about offline mode? I think is very important accessing data when there is no internet connection.
