what does stable/unstable mean? which 1 shuold I install

Hi,

Please excuse my ignorance, but why are there 2 versions of WebGui (stable and unstable) available for download ?

How do I decide which one to use?

Is the unstable one buggy? if so why is it available before it's completed?

Thanks for any enlightenment

David

Re: what does stable/unstable mean? which 1 shuold I install

Hi David,
No question is too small for us J.
Each one of our version holds a set of features and bug fix.
When we release a version there might be issues and bugs that happened because of what we done and we didn’t discover at the QA time.
That is why this version is unstable.
Once we release a version we start working on the next one. While working on the next version if any issue accord in the previous version we release a stabilization version that helps stabilize that version. We do this until all issues are solved or the next Major issue is ready. The last stabilization version is the stable version that has no known issues.

If you had an open issue that was holding you back in the development and that issue was solved in the latest unstable version then you probably want to use it. Also if there is a new feature that you want you will need the unstable version.

Issues from unstable version get priority to allow you to overcome problems that hold you back in development.

I hope this helps.

Hi Eyal,

Thanks for the info, from what you say I understand that the unstable version is the stable version +.

So I'm always best of installing the unstable version?

Hi !

"...from what you say I understand that the unstable version is the stable version..." this will always be for the user (you) to judge at any given time.

You will have to weight the lack of features or the "stable bugs" in the stable version, compared to what you get in the unstable version.  If you decide to use the stable version, because you are not using any of the stuff that's buggy in there, you would be fine with the stable version.

If you need any of the features in the new version, you will have to try to go for the unstable version. What you get is more features, but what you can also get is more and/or other type of bugs, that either have not been fixed, or they have not been found. The unstable version goes through some minor version changes (like 6.1, 6.1.1 etc.) until Gizmox releases the next major version (like 6.2). As the number of minor versions increase, the more stable the release gets.

One way to go is to let the major release come out, and wait until it gets to minor version 1 or 2, then most of the difficult bugs will have been fixed, and you are more safe to go.

Many of us just arn't that patient :-) and we jump to the first new version that's out, being major or minor, doesn't really matter, and then we try to support Gizmox dev team, by letting them know of the bugs we hit.

As always, this will be your choice, and I think currently there is no way to say which method is "safer".
