PORTLAND, Ore. — Hackers could win a $10,000 prize by breaking into a Visual WebGUI (graphics user interface) application between now and Jan. 30, 2009.
Visual WebGUI developer Gizmox Ltd. (Tel Aviv, Israel) is offering the prize for its "empty client" development tool designed to help non-programmers to develop uncrackable code for Web-based applications.
Gizmox CEO Navot Peled estimates the company has attracted almost 300,000 downloads since making Visual WebGUI available on an open-source basis. "We wanted to prove to the world that our empty-client architecture is hack-proof, so we are offering this $10,000 prize to anyone who can prove us wrong."
The architecture is called "empty client" because no code is loaded onto computers that are running applications developed using Visual WebGUI. Instead, the interface uses a rendering engine that communicates with a software server using the Extensible Markup Language Hypertext Transfer Protocol. The client views actions performed on the server, meaning no application code, user-interface code or data is managed by the user's computer.
Visual WebGUI can be downloaded for free. The company is currently developing a professional version that will be available for sale after the contest ends. For more on contest details, click here.
